According to the SLC exam result published on Tuesday, only 41.57 (167,935) percent out of total 511,165 regular students passed the exam this year.
The pass rate is down by 6 percent compared to the last year. This year’s SLC result is the second worst result of this decade.
The decline in the pass rate is likely to cause a serious impact in the education sector, claim education policy analyst.
According to the Exam Controller’s Office, Sanothimi, a total of 17,229 had sat for the SLC exam as exempted students, while 8,318 (7.76%) became successful.
At a press conference organized after the announcement of the result, Examinations Controller Khagraj Baral said among the total passed, there were 96,454 boys and 71,481 girls.
Of those who passed, 16,924 secured distinction; 76,165 secured first division; 69,830 the second and 5,016 passed in the third division.
The Exam Controller’s Office said result of 818 students was withheld while 6,067 students failed to appear the SLC exam while those of 230 was cancelled.
For those who failed up to two subjects, the supplementary exam would be held from August 4 to 11.
When inquired about the reason behind the declining pass percentage, SLC exam conduction committee chairman and Secretary at Education Ministry, Som Lal Subedi failed to answer why but said the exam was held in a disciplined way and questions prepared from within the textbook.
However, he said irregular study was hindrance to quality education.
Educationist Dr Bidyanath Koirala said the exam result this year has proved that the investment in school education was wasted.
Government can’t escape its responsibility saying students did not learn and teachers took regular class, he argued.
The Office of the Controller of Examinations stopped publishing the result in newspaper from this year and made a provision to get the result through the internet and through the telephone service.
The results could be accessed through SMS by sending the required information to 1400 (Nepal Telecom), 500 (Janaki Technology), 2722 (Apca Nepal), 5566 (focusone), 2,333 (Miracle Infocom), 4949 (EG service) and 5225 (Teletalk).
Likewise, students can also download their marksheet from the website of the Office of the Controller of Examinations slcresult.soce.gov.np and / www.soce.gov.np, and Nepal Telecom’s website www.slc.ntc.net.np. Students have to enter their date of birth for acquiring their complete marksheet.
Responding to journalists’ query over the leakage of the result by office staff one hour before it was announced, Secretary Subedi said an investigation would be carried out into the issue and action will be taken against those found involved in it.
